WE ARE SUR,
Three young musicians from different cultural backgrounds who have found each other in music. We play original compositions where our roots, our background and passion for folklore and western music are clearly expressed. The songs have a strong narrative character, conveying stories of the nomads and the passionate lives of the gypsies. the mixing of acoustic and electric guitars with powerful and warm percussion results in fresh and surprising compositions. Our different cultural backgrounds are clearly audible in the music we create. One can hear moorish and flamenco rhythms accompanied by western melodies in the compositions of hafez ismaili m'hamdi, while elco jongkind’s work clearly blends blues motives with spanish tradition and jazz. The percussion playing of ziga sercer adds turkish, flamenco and latin influences that combine with the melodies to create a rich and inspirational musical content that can satisfy even the most demanding listeners.

Hafez ismaili is 29 years old and has completed his training at the royal conservatory in the hague four years ago. There he studied jazz guitar and was taught by, among others,
Eef albers, martijn van Iterson and international celebrities like Kurt Rosenwinkel and Michael Brecker. After playing as a sideman in various jazz groups, he decided to form the band SuR with Elco Jongkind in which he both composes and performs. Hafez further establishes himself by composing and supervising a number of singers including Samira Dainan, a singer who sings Arab and mediterranean music with a low western interpretation.
Elco Jongkind is 34 years old and has completed his guitar education at the royal conservatory in the Hague three years ago where he had lessons from Eef Albers, Hein van de Geyn and other established jazz names. Slco is a versatile guitarist who plays in various formations. Currently, he composes for and plays in the funk band from Jamal Thomas (drummer of saxophone legend Maceo Parker), composes and plays for the band SuR and recently he launched his own blues trio Blues Hunters.
Ziga Sercer
Born and raised in Slovenia he started playing classical piano at the age of 8, which gave him a good ear for rhythm and the feel for melody. But it wasn’t until much later, at the age of 20, that he discovered the amazing world of percussion. After four years of playing different venues and festivals he decided to develop his musical skills further, so he applied to Codarts, hoogeschool voor de kunsten in Rotterdam, Holland, where he was accepted into both latin and turkish department. Studying with different teachers and playing with musicians from all over the world gave him an insight into Middle Eastern, latin American, gypsy and flamenco music. the experience gained with playing different percussion instruments and mixing various music styles makes his sound unique, fresh and exciting.
